Student Leaders Unite for a Greener World

The Student Council of the Assumption College-San Lorenzo organized a three day activity dubbed Interscholastic Leadership Awareness Workshop (ILAW), last August 21-23, 2008. The activity instilled awareness among student leaders on vital issues affecting the youth and came up with a plan of action to address them. This year's theme focused on the environmental concerns.

Four senior students represented the Student Affairs Central Body (SACB) of La Salle Green Hills took part in the event along with the students leaders from Assumption College, Makati, St. Paul College, Pasig, Ateneo de Manila, Lourdes School of Mandaluyong, and Saint Pedro Poveda College, among others. The workshop culminated with a clean-up activity at the Manila bay Yacht Club.

Marvin Cabrera (4B), 4th Year Level Representative expressed his insights about the activity, "For me, the highlight of this workshop was the Manila Bay clean-up. It was an experience I will never forget. This made me realize how dirty and uncivilized some of us are... We should preserve the place we live in. There won't be another planet Earth, no matter how hard you look for one in outer space. He then quoted an Indian proverb, 'We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrowed it from our children.'"

Carlo Vergel De Dios(4D), SACB Security Committee Head shared the same thoughts. "I was excited to attend (the Manila Bay clean-up). To tell you the truth I was really shocked with all the trash I saw. It really opened my eyes that we should act now. We should take care of our environment. What would happen if we'd just keep on wasting the remaining resources we have? It would be best if the youth will act on this matter now. Let's start the change we want to see!", he said.
